. Captain Scott and 15 men wanted to be first men at South Pole. At same time captain Amundsen and 7 men from Norway started their journey to the South Pole. They were best skiers on Earth. They brought 99 dogs in their ship, Fram.

     Four months later Terra Nova arrived in New Zealand. They had some motor sledges, 26 dogs and also bought 19 ponies in New Zealand.

     Norwegians put a big wooden house on the ice. The house was full of food, skis and sledges. They call it “Framheim”. For long journey to the pole, the needed a lot of food, and they could not carry it all with them. So they made 10 depots between Framheim and the pole. They put a big black flag on top of them to find them again.

     Captain Scott’s main camp was “Cape Evans”. Between Cap Evans and the pole, they made 10 depots. Winter started, it was dark for four months. All men stayed in their camps.

     Totally 10 English men left the Cape Evans to the pole, which 5 men at half way came back to the camp. Scott and four men went with ponies, skis dogs and sledge. There was a lot of wind, snow and fog. The ponies walked slowly because their feet went into the snow. All motor sledge were broken.

     Five Norwegians reached the pole on 15^th December 1911 and stayed two days there. They left a tent there with some food and black flag and also Norwegian’s flag. On 26^th of January 1912 they came back to Framheim.

     January 17^th 1912 Scott and his men reached to the pole and found the tent and Norwegian’s flag. Scott wrote: This is a very bad day. We are all tired and have cold feet and hands. Great God this is an awful place. Five tired, unhappy men in the coldest, emptiest place on the earth turned north. Scott’s men were always hungry. The depots were difficult to find. One day They ate ponies meat. They were ill because their cloths were not warm and did not have much food. (T=-40 C) At Cape Evans, the English men waited, but Scott and four other men did not come. They founded their bodies next year in a tent.

     In the Scott’s diary they read: Please remember us, and look after our family. We did our best.
