The cause of man's commonest disease is not yet known. Colds are still a puzzle to doctors. Colds, like other disease, are probably caused by a germ, but that germ has never been found. If there is such a germ, it is so tiny it does not show under the best microscope.
Fall is the worst season of the year for colds. Fall is even worse than winter. More people catch cold in October than in any other month, but all months from October to June are "cold" months.
Here are some of the things doctors say will help you to keep from catching cold: Stay out of crowds as much as you can during the winter. Dress according to the weather. In bad weather, keep your feet dry and warm. Don't go bareheaded in cold weather. Wear something to protect your throat outdoors.
Eat sensibly. Don't overeat. Don't eat too much starchy food at the same meal. A meal with too much starch would be bread, potatoes, corn, beans, and cake. Eat plenty of fruit and green vegetables.
Keep your hands clean. Keep your fingers away from your mouth. Don't put anything in your mouth which doesn't belong in it-pencils, paper clips, coins, and things other people may have handled.
When you have a cold, it's only fair to others to keep away from them all you can. If you have a cold, don't go to gatherings of people. The best thing to do when you have a cold is to go to bed and rest.
